Bloodthirster: First, you wouldn´t like the Torians in my current game, where random procedure has assigned them a mentality of Pure Evil. Second, liking or not liking the Torians is irrelevant. The Human Race is destined to rule the galaxy, and, sadly, but doubtlessly, the Torians ***STAND IN OUR DAMNED WAY!!***

"Secondly, the difference between a scoring system that can be milked for an effort-free 10000 extra points and a scoring system that can be milked for a +10% boost if you're really trying is significant enough for serious discussion." Couldn´t agree more. Great post, Cataleptic! With players like you, no wonder the Aussies are a teeny bit difficult a challenge, even for the mighty Empire of G.R.O.S.S. LOL

"Any respectful empire would not tolerate obviously "unethical" points." First, we are not a respectful Empire. :D Oh, RESPECTABLE you were meaning to say? That´s better, but we would still rather be formidable than merely respectable. :) And what´s the nonsense about unethical points? Unless you use a cheat, all points are ethical. Mistakes in the scoring system are not the player´s fault, and milking is perfectly acceptable. At Civfanatics, they take great pride i

"This would truly reward the person that beats the game in the fewest turns, which is as it should be IMHO. If you take that and then for the metaverse, account for the 10 best games for each player, you accomplish two things. The casual player will stand a chance and two the top rating goes to the person who can beat the computer the quickest." Agreed. With your lots of evil games, how about joining G.R.O.S.S.?!! G.R.O.S.S.: Together we will ruin the Galaxy. :D

Another thing is that what matters for winning should matter for scoring. You do not really need a very large population to actually win the game, so why do you need it for scoring. It´s totally artificial. Same is true for the other criteria, how far are you up the tech tree, how much money was spent for lease, but that´s totally irrelevant really, as long as you win. All that should really matter for scoring is difficulty of start, and perhaps how elegant you win, but the latter is ve

"G.R.O.S.S. knocked the Dev's (everyone's favorite empire target no ill will or hard feelings of course) out of the top 10. Now that's a public service!!!!!!" Btw, no Galactic Map update? Are they still suffering from the shock of falling off the edge of the universe? :D

Frogboy: "Anyone claiming to know how scores are calculated to any serious precision is mistaken." Excuse me, *that*, precisely, is a large part of the problem for everyone who likes to play competitive. :( The scoring system couldn´t be transparent enough.

"I mean all games but giant/abundant would be pointless since you could nowhere else reach a compareable pop! And I think many people will agree when I say that giant/abundant is the easiest setting for the human player..." I have said that so often, my tongue is falling off. :D I can´t imagine why there weren´t more thoughts put into the scoring system. I mean, it´s a relatively small thing, and when not working well, puts off a lot of people who would like to have a real co

Just a few tidbits: From a pure number-crunching viewpoint, the Technologists are -surprisingly- the worst Party: They give you advantages worth 3 ability pts. while most others give 4. Speed is very strong, perhaps too strong. As fsk says, it helps on large maps, but it also helps on small ones, which you can quickly dominate. AND it helps -a lot- in tactics: With 1 more Movement Point, you can stay just out of range of an enemy, so it´s your choice to attack, defend or flee.

sw: If there is any problem, it´s the precise opposite: There are no really decent defenders in the Battleship/Dreadnought period. All you need do is get a few Battlehammers, and the Axes are galactic history. :)

"Coffee, sheesh, are you a "European" by any chance?" You have a knack for stepping into it. LOL ;) Matter of fact, yes. "I regularly misquote for dramatic effect." Grrrr. (Contemplating spreading C.P. on my toast.) :d "My understanding is that at Crippling, the economic model is 'even' between AI civs and Human." Not quite. The Geniuses get +5%. At Painful it´s even. "I apologise if I overstepped the mark." Apology accepted. Gue

"Coffee: If you can't win on crippling or at least painful you are just not trying. Fortunately, G.R.O.S.S. is not about winning or scoring." Huh? What are you talking about? :notsure: I *DID* win on crippling, that was my point. (But I only got 121. Painful/medium, I got about 300, which isn´t much, either.) I have never even played below average. But I am annoyed that one can get 1000s of pts for simple/beginner games. >:( And if strategy games are not ab

Oh yeah, and I won my game on Crippling. And all I got was a lousy 121 pts. LOL I have this Evil theory that the score system is designed to demotivate you winning on high difficulty to make the Ai look better. ;p (Have to admit the Ai on Genius is quite good, though. Not really Geniuses, but at least Competents. The only thing they are bad at is invasions.)

"It's not like you have to do anything truly evil to be called evil in this game. Anything you choose on those choices that benefits ya, gets ya slapped with the evil tag." Yeah, it´s interesting. And backstabbing does *not* make You Evil. I can backstab and warmonger to my heart´s content, causing billions and billions casualties, and get still classified Chaotic Good. LOL
