I'm playing on intelligent Vorlin, the level that puts me on equal with the AI. The tech victory is the easy (and I don't mean really easy on the hardest level, but the least hard) way out. If you're out of ideas or the AI has the advantage, tech victory will save you. I bet that it's by far the most common victory on bigger galaxies and by far the most common victory among topplayers, check the top 25 metaverse, so many Beyond Human victories. Just because it's the 'easy' way

My goodness... I don't even know how to react without starting a flame. I'll just say :sniff!: :sniff!: :sniff!:
Totally agree with Daetrinn on this topic. The techvictory is just that, hollow. Option 2 would be an easy and very fair solution to this problem.
Well guys have the both of you read this suggestion. I think this solves all the critical points (and I agree with quite a few of them) you have risen. Maybe it would be a good idea to disable techvictory after an AI has outrun you. That way the game continues but the techvictory isn't an option anymore. How about that? Wouldn't that make everybody happy. That way you can: - Still win a techvictory, but you have to outsmart the AI for it. - Continue playing after an AI
Solitair (no edit post) "They WANT to achieve a tech victory and an AI reaching it first shouldn't stop them." Well there are more people (look at the poll) that DO want the AI to be able to score a techvictory. I think the suggestion I made here is trying to make the best of both worlds.
But Solitair, "They WANT to achieve a tech victory and an AI reaching it first shouldn't stop them." It doesn't STOP them, it just stops them from achieving techvictory because they weren't good enough to beat the AI in it. I think the biggest problem is that people see their game end abruptly. With my suggestion you can still play the game and go out and win it. I think it's a good compromise between the poll options. Also this doesn't give any complications
How about this then Za H and others: Maybe it would be a good idea to disable techvictory after an AI has outrun you. That way the game continues but the techvictory isn't an option anymore. How about that? Wouldn't that make everybody happy. That way you can: - Still win a techvictory, but you have to outsmart the AI for it. - Continue playing after an AI has reached "Beyond Yor/Arcean/Torian/Altarian/Drengin", but without the techvictory as an option for you anymore.
I haven't been an avid Civilization player, but were AI civs in Civilization able to persue the 'Alpha Centauri victory'? Cause that's about the same as the GalCiv techvictory. Not allowing the AI to go for techvictory is basically handicapping the AI. So even though we now have this great AI, people want it handicapped??? I DO understand though that it can be a major letdown if you all of a sudden get the 'game over' message while you are in the middle of a tight game. But it'
Za I think you cannot compare this in anyway to the Orion council. There are several ways in this game to stop a cpu player from reaching techvictory. Thru spying, warfare and culture flipping you can stop a cpu. The Orion council cannot be stopped, it just happens, so this is incomparable. For me it's not about the Metaverse score in the first place. I just want to play a fair game vs the cpu players and that includes them being able to win thru techvictory.
Vorlin can you give me ONE single argument for that? As you say a lot in your last post, but there isn't a single argument there! I don't think that there would be any inbalance when the AI can go, just like the human player, for a tech victory. What would be wrong with that? It's just fair. Like the AI can win allied, military and cultural victories it should be able to win techvictory too. The poll is looking promising though.
I got the update too. No CTD, but no up to date forums either. Certainly not good advertising as I used to use the SDC forums quite a lot since it was so easy. Hope they fix it soon but I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one with these problems.
Is it me or is there something wrong with the forums via Stardock Central? Looks like it hardly updates the posts. Also stickies that have been removed are still there.
I agree Vladnaq, sort of a warning would be nice, but this could also be a part of the spying game.
Aha there's a poll up about techvictory now. Needless to say that I voted YES. Great Monty Python reference BTW LOL I agree with Solitair on the whole scoring issue. That was never my main concern though. The biggest part of my concern is right up there in the poll. The AI should be able to score a techvictory too and persue that victory condition every once in awhile. That alone can put up another (fair) challenge.
Nope sadly the AI cannot win via Final Frontier. See also my topic here: http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=50580
That's why I think they SHOULD start their crusade early or the very final tech should be made much more expensive. That and the fact that the AI can persue tech victory too is what I think would make the tech victory harder and more balanced. Any other ideas?
Some valid points there Technician. I cannot understand how people use these cheesetactics and still have fun. But it happens with every game so I guess with GalCiv too. That said I'm having a great and fun time while playing the game at intelligent (without using any exploits) but I must admit that when I'm outnumbered I tend to go for the easy way out every once in awhile myself, thus going for tech victory, since it's doable even if other civs are superior. That's w
I still have a feeling that the Beyond Human vicotory is the 'easy way out'. I experienced this myself and it's obvious when you take a look at the top metaverse players. Beyond human victories are very common lately. I think this needs to be harder (by upping some of the research costs or making the AI extra aggressive when you start researching those final techs) or, and that's what I would really like, the AI must be able to score such a victory too and maybe even aim for it. <br
I was already contemplating Freya, but you gave me the last push. :)
If you want to be completely sure jl333, I wouldn't try my luck if I were you. Just finish this game and then update it. Also read the sticky posted by Brad (aka Frogboy).
Ok and here's another Dutchie that just joined the European Alliance!
Yeah I think I'll just do that now. My Age of Wonderers civ isn't really coming off the ground anyways.
Humane, the lastest build of 1.03, namely .054 fixes this problem. So go get it!
Interesting, haven't thought about it since the game came out. I must admit that I've never, ever come across it.
"The thing that struck me when I first subscribed to Drengin Net (and continues to strike me more and more every day since) is that for the first time I've run into a software company that is being run the way I would run it myself." Just the words I needed, thanks Elrikk, you hit the nail right on the head there! Stardock is such a fresh breath in the softwareworld. The dedication and support for GalCiv are unsurpassed. The fact that Brad (and a few other Stardockians
