Oh... sorry, didn't read your last line and cannot edit :( There's no copyprotection on the cd so that can't be the problem. Do you have another drive (burner perhaps) to try the game? Checked the cd for scratches?

Yep, but try to get the maximum out of it by putting some extra stuff in the deal. If you trade techs there's always a way to squeeze money out of the AI too. Just up the amount and number of months till the colour switches to yellow and you can find out where the break-even point is.

I partly agree here. I'm being outplayed by the Drengins and Yor in my current game on a huge map, but my defenses are holding pretty easily. I guess a military conquest will be hard, but I'm going for the research victory, which is faily easy to get, since the AI cannot go 'beyond Drengin' or 'beyond Yor' anyways.

Not a very good idea IMHO. I had troubles with morale too at first, but in my last two games I've had it fully under control. Besides lowering taxes, there's research to be done and the odd morale resource to mine. There's propaganda and there are social projects. All in all very direct ways to control morale yourself.

I like that 'transcendance' idea. This gives the AI (or the player) a target to aim for. Currently the tech victory is the most easy victory (for an experienced player). The metaverse stats show it. The only painful victories I can track on the Metaverse have been 'beyond human' wins. Though there are probably too few games to draw big conclusions like this, I DO think that the AI needs a fighting chance here. If they win by techvictory they outplayed the player, so they deserve to win

You have got the be kidding here. The Heroes IV was known to be one of the biggest AI disasters in gaming history. When the game came out the AI hardly knew how to even move. Goes to show how reviews are 'bought' or written by reviewers who didn't play the game properly these days. The MOO3 AI rated higher? Not bad for an AI that doesn't know how to invade planets. That same AI was easily beatable at the highest difficulty level where it cheated like hell too! ~SDC~

Was posting when Boogiebac posted, so I hadn't read that post yet. Mostly I'll stick to my earlier post though. A sudden "game over" is cheesy, but if you get a fair warning there's still time to attack that AI and thus preventing its techvictory. Most important though is how the other AI's react to this. They should at least try to hinder the human and other AI players for reaching that 'research victory' goal. Something they obviously don't do at the moment.

I think the AI should be able to win thru the techrace also. Some topplayers on the metaverse have won the game on a very high difficulty level, but mostly because of a research victory. So either the AI should try to hinder a Human research victory more or the AI should be able to win like that too, although the tech should be called different for them.

You HAVE to build up your military. When you do that, you don't have to use them, but the AI won't declare war on you so easily. The AI players look at easy prey before the declare war. If you have nice, healthy planets but no military, the AI will pick you. You don't have to be military power number 1, but you need to own enough military to scare the AI from declaring war on you.
