My first game was on medium and took 8-12 hours, I'd guess. At the end my biggest hulls were large, I had base 4 weapons and base 2 defense (in my best weapon/def techs), and I there was a massive amount of techs leftover after I won by conquest. I could've kicked back and teched up but I was already crushing everyone (on beginner). I'm gonna play on "normal" now and see how it goes. So, I guess, the tech tree is rather large and unlike some other games you probably won't

Well, I finished my first real game (2nd game overall - 1st one didn't last long as I got used to stuff). I was playing a medium sized map on beginner level as a custom race. Things went from being very good, to a bit scary, to good again. The game took me a loooong time to play - somewhere between 8 and 12 hours (not sure exactly). I had a nice start and was able to gobble up some extra systems. I started off peacefully developing non military techs and didn't even
I've found some things I'd consider bugs or something but overall I think the release went very smooth. People who aren't having problems are happily playing...while the few with problems are posting and going nuts - and a lot of those people have problems because of their own computers or operating systems being in terrible shape. The other thing is that I know that the Stardock crew will take care of us. I've bought so many games that were good - but that needed a little more love
I've only seen my populations get into the mid 20's regardless of world size and food supply. I'm wondering if it's worth trying to go any higher.
Seeems kinda odd to me (that you can't declare war). Seems like at the least all the AIs should consider you slightly dishonorable if you do surprise attack types of wars rather than declaring in advance. I'm pretty sure the AI declared on me without attacking first in my first game.
If it's not fleets the battels are usually super quick, so just zoom in really close before engaging.
No probs with my ATI 9800 Pro either. Several games I play run pretty hot and make my case noisy but GC2 hasn't done that at all.
2. I've had this happen with transports several times too. Not only do I get a "ghost fleet" of zero logistic points (and inability to "fleet" my ships), but after I've moved all the ships there will still be an icon for the "ghost fleet" when I zoom out to "icon view" distance. Usually this happens if I have several transports in one "tile" (while staging for invasion). The first fleet of transports will create just fine...then I launch them into battle, they die, and then when I try to make
Pre-DLed fine. Got game running fine. No major problems. ALT+TAB is iffy and there's a bunch of questionable behavior I'd have to call bugs.
Bah...my post got obliterated and I'm not retyping it. It sucks when reviewers spew without actually playing a game and it's early still even for initial thoughts...so I'll review the game later. So far, so good. I'm having fun and the game looks vastly better in person than in screenies. The game is not very alt+tab friendly AT ALL. I have an AMD3000 with 1g RAM and an ATI9800 128, WinXP, etc - and I've successfully alt+tabbed once so far - all other times the
If you click on a starbase...you see the AoE. What I *would* like added is a way to see that AoE BEFORE you build. If there's a way, do tell. I'm having to save/reload when placing starbases sometimes to try to get them optimally placed.
I've never really liked laptops. I don't like the constriction, relative lack of power, difficulty of upgrading, or the cost. I've been programming and gaming for 20+ years. I prefer a natural keyboard, wireless optical mouse, and huge 22" CRT. The tiny keyboards with whacked layouts, mouse substitutes, and tiny displays of laptops make me cringe. Granted, you can plug in other devices or dock your laptop - but IMO, if you're going to go thru all that hassle then why have the laptop in the
The logistics cost of guarding a trade route would likely make the route cost a lot more than it produced. You're probably better off having some freighters on hand as backups, and/or establishing less potentially risky routes, and/or spreading out your routes so an enemy can't completely disrupt all of your trade easily. In GalCiv1, if an AI was harassing your freighters, it would usually be with a small number of ships, so you could counter with a slightly bigger ship or
Check your junkmail/spam folders - it could've ended up there. And of course, make sure you're checking the correct email account. In my case...check the delete folder since my wife decided to clean up our emails and neither Stardock or Galactic Civilations II mean anything to her (so they looked like garbage). Edit...probably depends how you pre-ordered too. I orded CDs from Stardock themselves. I'm also an existing customer from GalCiv1 so I already have SDC
I think the human AI decision to not make an alliance with Altaria was a bad one. The Drengin was in position to destroy both Humans and Korx at the end of the game. And if the Torians surrendered to the Altarians instead of the Drengins when they did, it would probably result in a different war history. Not wanting to nitpick but maybe the AI is still lacking in the allia
I've been mispronouncing Drengin this whole time. Ack. Hehe, me too.
...wow Feel free to post lots more videos. As is often the case with games...screenshots simply do not capture just how awesome a game might look.
Tactical would be nice if it was incredibly well done, I guess, but if you have a large empire and a lot of battles it gets tedious in a hurry. I can surely live without it. I'm guessing that watching the battles in the cinematic style of GalCiv2 will be much more entertaining...and optional! I remember in MOO2 I usually did tactical battles, such as they were, just because the auto-fight usually resulted in huge losses. In every MOO2 battle I would fight the exact same way so it
I dislike copy protection because I pay for the games (and music, etc) that I use. I prefer Stardock's methods because I also don't like to have a CD/DVD in my drive to play. Not to mention that manuals and such are nice, but being able to download games and play them NOW is nicer. All those physical materials will be gathering dust shortly after acquisition. Ultimately if people want to pirate or crack they will and all protection and CD in the drive does is punish peopl
I want the 10 seconds or so back that it took to read the original, and totally ridiculous, post.
I thought it was a good write up. I generally don't like RTS and I've only played the demo for this game but it was very enjoyable and I'm still tempted to buy it. But, the only RTS I've ever really loved is Rise of Nations (and the T&P expansion), because you can pause at any time while retaining full command control (which leads to a more relaxed feel), and because it blends typical RTS elements with Civilization-like elements. I'd actually put RoN in my top 10 games lis
It doesn't really matter when you get your physical CDs and stuff as long as you can download and play the game on release day? (or DL the final pieces on release day having pre-DLed the bulk of the game before then) And you'd have the PDF version of the manual, which is better than nothing (assuming you haven't already read thru the draft versions several times already) Unless I'm missing something...
I strongly rcommend not buying from Walmart. There strong anti-union and racist and sexist policies in promotions are a turnoff to all who toil for a living and expect better. Walmart is really exploiting Chines labor and possibly prisonlabor as well, though I have not confirmed that specific detail yet. They have huge factories in China where workers have no free un
I agree with Zoomba. Rendering 10 planets around a larger star would be a visual mess in this type of game.
"Absent Multiple Player Feature A Game Killer?" For me, no. I don't play multiplayer at all unless I'm playing a MMORPG. I actually like the focus on strong single player. It annoys me when a dev's excuse for weak AI and weak single player in a game is that you should play against other people for a real challenge. There are tons of games out there that either feature MP or have strong MP, and I don't think every game needs to have MP support, because I think there are a
