Homeworld has some great mods, including an interesting Star Wars vs. Star Trek one, and I'm pretty sure someone already did Babylon 5 ships. The Star Wars ships in that mod are far better than anything Lucas Arts has released, albeit they haven't made a pc space flight sim in a while. The game just has a great engine for that type of thing. If only we could marry a pared down homeworld engine with Gciv. btw, B5 is also my favorite TV space genre. But instead of waiting for the "mod

I do what you describe a lot, but I think the downside is that you don't often get maximum utility for your money. For example, you can set tech really high and get something in say, 10 turns. But sometimes, you can bump up soc or military to 30 or 40 and still get it in 10-12 turns, as well as a bunch of units and soc upgrades. It all depends on how large your production/research/economic levels are in respect to each other, as well as, of course, the cost of the thin

When playing crippling, medium size... I like to piss off the Drengin early, which is of course not hard to do. They blather on about using my corpse for cheap fuel and declare war. I then go on a 100% defender building spree (1-2 turns per defender.) Even with a few sporadic attacks, I soon have 6 or defenders on each planet. Clearly, the drengin suffer from defender-phobia, since their ships far outclass mine. As a result, they are then willing to "reconsider their war" and negotiate peac

With all due respect to Javascout's tree, there's one I find much more effective at http://galciv.bsd.st/zai_h/ It not only looks clearer, but it has all the information you need to play the game (tech benefits, maintenance/research costs, ship stats, etc.) After printing a good four page version of this, tape them together, fold in half and you'll hardly, if ever, need to access the tech database. One problem though is that, since it contains so much detail that is subject to change

No, not really. It doesn't modify any ship-related graphics, as far as I know. I would think that somebody else would have also noticed it by now, at least if it were that serious. I have heard of an invisible ship bug in previous version of galciv. I think they fixed it though. If you're not running the latest update, I'd check the version notes. There's a link to it from within the Stardock app, in the update pane.

You mean they're rankings depending on how much certain mystery people approve of you? Hmm... And it seems that people really value this ranking. I have to admit that I find this a bit bizarre and somewhat unsettling. :p eh, screw it. forceinfinity, I've been watching you carefully, and I hereby dub you knight of the galactic civ independent round table! You may not assume all the respect and honours that this position deserves. congratulations! p.s. If you haven't

Regardless off how well-thought arguments are or how many smilies people may add :), one problems with forums and e-mails is that there is always some level of ambiguity. IMO, the best strategy is to err on the side of caution. It's better to have a less "pointed" point that is heard than an accurate one that is perceived in a tone that you didn't intend. I happen to agree that the praise around here is often piled on too thick as well as the criticism of the rest of the industry. That said,

I don't think what I said above about the name ending with numbers is accurate. The documentation seemed to suggest that the mdl name does not have to be the same as the source tga files. But I think now that they do have to be identical. All the ones that weren't identical crashed for me. That's probably the real problem I was having. But I'm still getting some very strange results. I can take the exact same files, rename them, and then regenerate an mdl that is much larger than t

Well, I guess since there have been no updates, no feedback and no real ship mods released, I guess people aren't using the tool very much :( Hopefully, I'm wrong and new mods are about to pop up all over the place. Well, I've been experimenting a bit and have had a lot of crashing problems. I've finally isolated it the problem. Either the game or, more likely, mutil has a problem when generating mdl files whose name ends in a number. So, dnot.mdl is OK, but dnot13.mdl is not. The d

To add to what mykbaker said, the readme that comes with it tells you exactly which files are replaced. If you backup just those files, you don't have to copy that much, perhaps 15 megs or so, but that's just a guess. This doesn't include the music "add-on".

Galciv said...
Twilight of humanity? Earth Today Magazine published yesterday an article pointing out that if you took the economic rating of the Empire and combined it with their military rating and compared it to ours it would be 260 for them and 265 for us. Clearly this is chilling news.
Clearly :) Not sure if this would be considered a bug, but it is certainly a cause for alarm!!! (no double meaning intended)

I've also seen this. In fact, it's been in the majority of games I've played. I thought someone said that this happens because luck or creativity can provide a random tech without the prerequisites, and for some reason it prefers virus elimination. But unfortunately, it never gives it to me :( I could probably also give you a save game.

Thanks for the compliment Boogie :) Yeah, that guy is a riot. You should see the full thing. And, ah, tutorial?!? :SURPRISED: Now you tell me. I just did a search in the mod forum and found it. Of your 3 tutorials, that's the only one that's not stickied. Just my luck ;) Vridian: sorry, there's no boba, but he'd be a good one to add. He spent a lot of his screen time just standing there, which would be perfect for the diplomacy window. wampyre: I don't think it would m

Very minor bug: a ship can move outside its range if there is something blocking its way. For example, if you tell a ship to go to the very edge of its furthest sector and it finds another ships on the spot when it gets there, the new obstacle avoidance path can move it into a sector it shouldn't be able to get to. I don't know if this would allow you to colonize a planet on the edge of that sector, but it probably would let you build a constructor.

No need to be sorry. I just downloaded it and tested the archive, and it worked fine. Since AOL, in general, is evil, I'm guessing it has something to do with that. Perhaps you can use a different program to download it (I'm assuming you're using some proprietary browser.) Maybe an ftp program that lets you enter URLs, or a download manager like GetRight. But I haven't used AOL since the early 90's, so I'm just guessing.

I'm glad you like it, Thrull :) The only problem is that I never want to eliminate the "drengin" anymore because then I wouldn't get to talk to him ;)
Cool... but way too large for me to download
Cryptbeef, I made a super lo quality version that may be small enough for you. It doesn't replace the Yor, which isn't a big loss since the movie/mp3 for the mon calamari were pretty much just filler. And now all the sounds are 48kbps. It sounds pretty shallow for S

No, I'm not really interested in it enough to spend time doing that. But if you are, I wouldn't worry about having artistic skill. If you're just converting their work, you're not going to need much. You just to learn the basics of Photoshop, which are pretty straightforward and how to use the conversion programs. btw, there's a Civ III star wars mod that also has a lot of stuff you could use, and they have no problem with that as long as you credit them.
