Windows XP does not require Active Desktop to run .jpgs, and has not required Active Desktop for some time, since the release of SP1 I believe. I routinely use .jpg's on my desktop and Active Desktop is not running. I also run Desktop X at startup and rarely shut it down, and it runs just fine using a .jpg wallpaper.

I have yet to find anything on this in any WB documentation, but after checking in Skin Studio, I found that if one wants to include the wall as part of a WB skin, the wall must be a bitmap. I tried to load a .jpg anyway, and Skin Studio gave me an error. I then edited the file in notepad, and saved it, but when I reloaded the blind, the wall did not load. So apparently, bitmaps are required if one wants the wall to be included in the WB skin.

Joining the chorus, I would have to agree that Windowblinds 4.2 on WinXP is a true joy, and I have only very rarely seen memory use increase over running one of the MS Luna themes, and even then it wasn't enough to cause any concern (certainly not with 1GB of RAM). To answer your first question, right click on the DX tray icon and 'Configure Desktop X'. (If you don't see that option, 'Switch to Edit Mode', then right click the tray icon again.) For general all-purpose graphic editing, manipulation, and creation, Adobe Photoshop is hard to beat. Large icons are a global setting in display properties - The only native way to have them on the desktop is to also have them in the start menu. As werewolf mentioned, Icon X, part of DesktopX2 is the best way I know of to change only the icons on your desktop.
