Did you do an uninstall of the old drivers through Add/Remove Programs, reboot, then install the new drivers? I sure did! What I hadn't done was reboot it a second time to let the new settings settle in. It's now running just fine. And the game looks _outstanding_...

w00t! The card arrived, the card is installed, the new drivers are downloaded and.. the game crashed. I was using a save game, does that matter?

-- delay military production: If you wait to start actually building ships, the AI will see you as "weak", and start demanding tribute and techs from you, eventually declaring war. Be sure to notice: I mean only to delay building the ships: you should keep up the pace of military research, and make sure that you have planets capable of rapid productions, so that you can start churning out ships when war does come. I do this a lot. I make sure that I bui

Silly question: Will a better video card help me rip DVDs faster? Or is that purely a CPU function? And it suddenly occurs to me that even asking that question might be illegal...

You'd be surprised at how often for me gifting the "alliance" tech is enough to push relations from "friendly" to "close"...

I am currently playing with an AGP 8X 128MB ATI Radeon 9600SE. I am looking to upgrade that a bit, but I don't have all _that_ much cash to spend. I am willing to spend up to US$80... The problem is that I don't know anything about video cards anymore! In poking around a bit, I've noticed that some cards will actually take RAM from my system and use it for the video processing. My instinct is to simply go with an upgraded version of what I've got; I've found a Radeon 9600PRO 256MB 1

It sounds an awful lot like what Master of Orion 3 was aiming for. The problem is that the more complex you make something, the easier it is for that something to go completely off the rails. Don't get me wrong: I want to play the game you're describing! But I don't know if anyone can really pull it off...

Yup. Have the Thalians go to war with the Alliance. While they are distracted, build, build, build. Upgrade your ships... One thing to think about: As far as I know, tech trading is not effected by how they feel about you. As long as you're not actually trading warheads, you ought to be able to get technology. I'd see if the the alliance has anything you want... Something else: Alliances are defensive only. If one part goes to war, the rest won't. Its only when you declar

The best text viewer I've found is Firefox. Not the least reason is it's handy "find" function, which is a subtle but profound improvement over every previous find function I've ever used... Not to mention the [ctrl] + [+] makes text bigger. Which my poor, old eyes need...

I am impressed that you know my graphics card well enough to know what my problem is! By chance can you recommend one for Less than US$100 that will be better than what I've got? Since mine is a couple years old, I don't imagine it will be that difficult...

I don't mean to sound negative: I love looking at the screen shots. The problem is that I only ever get to see the pretty new graphics in those very screen shots-- I can no longer play this game using textures... In order to avoid my game coming to a crawl, I had to turn all textures off. I didn't used to have to do that for GalCiv2:DL, but for DA, I find that the game is unplayable on my machine with textures on. If the game is now handling textures better, why am I unable to use the

I just got one that had an eventual PQ of 56! I'm gonna have to ferry a lot of people to that planet... If Yay54 is right (and I think he is), this sounds like a bug...

I love finding the planets that are highly toxic, and have a rating of 1. Why? Because when I Terraform the hell out of them, they turn into planets with a PQ of 10+. The problem is that population on these planets does not grow... I don’t mean that the population grows slowly. I mean that 100 turns after settlement, the planet still has the 2billion people I plunked down to settle the place. This might be a feature. The Devs could well be thinking dude, the planet is a radioac

I think it should be fairly simple: have military strength be calculated sans any starbase bonuses. Of course, decisions to attack any particular area ought still look at how strong your ships are in that area. But overall military might has a strong element of projection to it...
