Had a couple of Terran systems defect to the Drengin (I assume because of low morale). This isn't so odd because I had flipped to Star Democracy too soon and wasn't able to keep morale up. The only problem is that the Drengin race no longer existed in the game. When a system defects to another race shouldn't the game check to see whether the race is in play? Another oddity was that one of the systems that defected was my home system. I think it should be a bit harder

One modification to my post above. I went back to the saved game and doubled-checked...there is only one tech past "Beyond Human" and that one is "Final Frontier". I also toyed with the other two techs on that level (Galactic Peace and Galactic Domination) and of the three game winning techs only Beyond Human actually takes you to the end-game summary screen. The other two drop you back into the game to continue playing even though the tech says "You Won". Cheers Magus

This is going to be both far ranging and lengthy so please bear with me. I’ll attempt to organize things by section but there is some overlap. I finished my first complete game of Beta 1Z last night and I have quite a few observations and comments which I hope will be of value. Planets: 1. The game needs a way to get a quick overview of what is currently in production on a given planet. 2. When another race finishes a one per galaxy production item it would be helpful i

On #1: Will do. For this sort of issue shouldn't subsequent betas incorporate the ships that have been posted to the library since the last beta? This seems to have been done with the dreadnaught. On #2: On the sound issue...if I restart Galciv the sound comes back. As for a save game that exhibits the problem :d The save game I sent to you earlier this week was saved just after the sound had failed. On #4: I tried what J. Michael Lynch suggested and it does indeed work

There were many little things changed in 1Z that improved things quite a bit but I'm going to point out a few problems. 1. Selecting "Starfighter" from the ship build menu results in GalCiv locking up. I have to use the Windows 2000 Task Manager to kill the process. 2. Sound sometimes fails. All sound will, at times, cease, this is normally followed in short order by a crash to the desktop (which isn't being caught by SmartException .090. 3. I mentioned this in an

The first tech for increasing the potential range of a ship is Controlled Gravity and under abilities, where I would expect to see something like "Range +10" is: "- String Not Found +10" Most of the key game files seem to be text files. Is this something that I can insert myself and have it work? If so what should the value be and where should it be placed? Cheers Magus

Tried a fresh install of DGM on an XP machine. No Galciv. My feeling is that this has to be something on the Stardock server end. The timing of having the new beta go up and many people no longer having Galciv show up in DGM is just too coincidental. Sigh Magus

Just tried a fresh install of DGM version .66b on a brand new machine and still no Galciv. Everything else, including B.U.G.S. shows up just fine. It crossed my mind that it might have been OS related as my primary machine is running Windows 2000 but the new machine is running XP and I get the same behavior. At this point it pretty much has to be something on the Stardock server end of things. Sigh Magus

As of this evening Galciv is no longer a choice to either play or update in DGM. Show betas is checked and B.U.G.S. shows up just fine but Galciv is gone. I can still play the game if I run the executable directly but DGM disavows it's existence. Puzzling Magus

I don't know what caused it but it Galciv is crashing with without SmartException picking it up. I get a Visual C++ popup window that states: Damage after normal block #39141 at 0x14A8080 A symptom of the problem is that I had a rather hefty survey ship 130+ hitpoints, 100+ in both attack and defense and was a level 5 well on the way to level 6 ship and when I restore from the save that I made just before the crash the values for the survey ship are set back to 100 odd HP, dou

So far so good. I just updated to the .090 version of SmartException that was referenced in a posting a few days ago and my Windows 2000 machine now both starts up and shuts down properly with SmartException installed and running. Magus

Well....it's better than it was. With the 066b build of DGM I no longer get the mcpserver failure on startup but what I now have is that the system no longer shuts down properly. During shutdown background tasks now hang during shutdown and require either a manual intervention or wait for the OS to decide that the task isn't responding to the shutdown command and have the OS kill the task before the shutdown will complete. If I disable mcpserver and smartexception the problem

The app below is the one I used to disable the errant Smartexception. There are many different avenues for a program to load at startup and one of the apps that I have found for finding them all is a nifty little free-standing app called "Startup Control Panel". http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml It works on any version of Windows newer than 3.1. One of the things that keeps coming up is the concept of ship ranges as a way to keep the game moving. MOO2 implemented this concept in a good way in the guise of researching advanced power sources for ship propulsion. If Galciv were to do something similar it would go a long way towards mitigating the following problems: - every habitable planet in the galaxy is nailed down early in the game. - every race is able to explore the entire galaxy fairly early in the gam

Ever since I downloaded and installed the newest version of DGM the mcpserver.exe start failure message was a constant. I had to remove it's attempt to load itself from the Windows 2000 registry. The ability to uninstall Smart Exception is something that should be looked at while the cause of this error is being looked at. It shouldn't be necessary to have to find a registry entry to "uninstall" something. Cheers Magus
