Welcome to everyone. I too am checking forums from work :) but I don't get much time in front of the computer these days so I actually have to do real work most of the time :(
Interesting, those are my starting picks too. Everything else I do (except 2 and 3) is completely different though :)
They're close in terms of overall AI strategy, I suppose. But the human has to play completely differently in order to compete. The AI bonuses are HUGE. Don't worry about the edit Miles, I've pulled the vanishing question trick on other people too :)
I think it would be a fairly easy change. The impression I had was that the AI was exactly the same for Crippling and Masochistic. They just gave the Masochistic players some huge ability bonuses and nerfed trading. If that's true, then implementing the intermediate level would just be a matter of picking some intermediate bonuses to give to the AI. Ray, I do think that it's possible to beat maso most of the time. I generally win those games which I play past initial colonizati
Oh and a level between Crippling and Masochistic. This one rather irks me because it would be so easy to implement. Hmm... maybe we should come up with a thread for easy-to-implement improvements. Offhand I can think of adjustable event frequency as another easy change that I would really appreciate. Just one suggestion, Ray? Don't be silly :)
Mine would better starbase management by AIs.
I've gotten into the high 60s without cheese. I got a large PQ bonus on colonization (almost 50%), then a Precursor event later on changed the base class of the planet to 35. Apparently the 50% colonization bonus got reapplied to base 35, so my new class was in the 50s before improvements. Tack on habitat, soil, terraforming, and the Terraformer and you've got a really really nice planet. The cheese tactic to get a really high PQ, which I've never used but which I've read about, is to b
Of course I remember that he played Maso--he had some nice strategy posts. My surprise was that he was still playing, since everyone else seems to have quit. That "Masochistic strategies" thread is pretty dead after all, and the only discussion of maso that I ever see anywhere on the forum these days is between you and me in the Fellowship thread. Matthew Downie summed it up well. I consider the +5% PQ bonus to be a very solid pick. If you do similar calculations for the +7% PQ pick, though, you will find it's hardly any better than the +5% pick--certainly not worth the extra points. [Message Edited]
Wow, Masochistic life still survives outside the Fellowship!
You have posts 25-28 and 30 in that thread. Did you go to page 2 of that thread? You need to go to page 2 to view posts 25-49, page 3 for 50-74, etc. To select a page number click on the numbers just below the last post on the page. [Message Edited]
[quote]Just because im admitting that Lord of the Rings doesnt intrest me should not cause any problems.[/quote] True, admitting that you don't like Lord of the Rings should not cause problems. However, the fact that you don't like Lord of the rings is *evidence* of your problems. ;)
I love Miles' internal dialogue--his thoughts are racing along at a million miles an hour and the goofiest ideas keep on coming out. He might be my favorite character in all of science fiction and fantasy.
Obviously I'm missing something because I'm up late... but Yoda, what are you saying with X|>|^TS?
[quote]Talking about demanding cultural SBs, I'll always give them to the AI if they demand for it.I would then buy it back from them with a few techs and they usually don't seem to demand the SB again. [/quote] I never thought of that! As for your question. I've occasionally gotten threatening messages when I was doing a buildup. But I've never seen the AI actually do anything about it--it never recalled ships to reinforce, and it certainly never declared war unless I slipped
If you play larger maps, then the game will generally last longer and you'll get deeper into the tech tree. Anything else depends on the specifics of how you play. As Ray said, it would be helpful if you posted that.
Evil is definitely better on small maps than on large. Think of it this way... if you only have three planets, then killing those worms increases the PQ of a third of your empire. If you have thirty, it really makes a much smaller difference to the overall productivity of your empire. However, the hit to your alignment--and thus to your relations--is the same in either case.
I build them both everywhere because I generally have money to spare. [Message Edited]
In contrast, I have *never* seen the AI complain about starbases in sectors where it has no planets. You'd think it would realize that four party palaces adjacent to its sector are much more of a threat than a shopping district within that sector. [Message Edited]
All of my posts recently have been directly related to Galciv, and the creative writing urges haven't really struck me since my first couple posts here. But I wanted to say to Miles, Ray, Gengsta, Mad Prophet, and everyone else that I do really enjoy seeing your writing and your stories here, in spite of my unfortunate lack of participation within those stories. [Message Edited]
hehe, seeing "Naismith out" there suddenly gave me an urge to go reread all those Bujold books.
There is no way to play multiplayer Galciv.
You beat a Large in four hours? You're a Galciv machine!
I'm afraid that the credit for the gigantic maso win really should go more to getting a nice start than to my own skills. All five AIs were set to pure evil/incredible, and I went pure good. I started off after maybe five control-N's with a big cluster in the corner, and did sector influence checks and realized that it was all mine and the other AIs were scattered throughout the other smaller clusters. It turned out after colonization that maybe a bit under a third of the habitable star
